Own it.

The objective of this project was to develop a functional soft good that creates a story inspired the future WGSN trends of society and design.“Own it” exists as a conversation piece to bring awareness to the amount of waste we create daily. “Own it” gives a way to display your trash so you can recognize the amount of trash you produce and so you can customize your bag to expresses who you are.

trend research

I utilized multiple iterations of mind maps to dissect how the societal macro-drivers, consumers, future consumers, and material and color trends interrelated. I honed in on these WSGN drivers:

Macro Driver: "Less is More"

Future Consumers: "Market Maker" & "Kindness Keeper"

Material Trends: "Plastic Waste" & "Crafting Movement"

A/W 21/22 Color Trend: A.I. Aqua

waste research

Now came the challenge of how best to display waste in an everyday bag. I tracked my personal trash production for a month and measured the dimensions of the different types of trash. I also collected common trash of other college students and let the waste research drive the dimension specifications of my piece. To unsure that all trash types can be displayed, the transparent plastic sleeves are sized to fit specific common trash dimensions and have larger sleeves for the user to get creative with arranging the trash they produce. Potentially in the future I would like to develop a feature for consumers to input their weekly trash and the bag customize the size of the pockets to fit.
